A couple of days ago my sight was caught by an ad of \u201cPatanjali Hatha Yoga\u201d event in Kharkov, and I could not but turn the yoga community attention to incorrectness of this word combination. They started speaking about Hatha Yoga in the period of the Naths, that is, 600 to 800 years after Yoga Sutras had been written. As to Sutras, they don\u2019t give any specific descriptions of asanas or pranayamas. In a short discussion commenting the post Boris Zagumennov, a man I hold in high regard and one of the first interpreters of Sutras from Sanskrit into Russian, advanced an idea that though Patanjali does not, of course, use the term \u201chatha yoga\u201d he, however, speaks about \u201cstages that refer to body\u201d. This is a very popular point of view; moreover, I also personally stick to the idea that proper body work is essential prior to taking to more complex and sophisticated yoga practices. But! My personal (or, say, the common and traditional) opinion is one thing, while the opinion of Patanjali and commentators is a totally different issue. Indeed, Patanjali did mention asana and pranayama as constituents of yoga, but were these terms of his identical to their present-day meaning?<\/div>\n<div><a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div>For a man of today working with one\u2019s body first of all implies its training aimed at changing and improving its corporal, primarily aesthetic conditions. This is the approach we\u2019ve inherited from the Ancient Greeks to whom the credit thus goes. And this is the vein yoga practiced in most [fitness] clubs. The \u201cyoga\u201d of this kind may be good or bad for one\u2019s body, depending upon the teacher&#8217;s qualification, but we must honestly admit it to be European gymnastics, and singing OM or \u201cvisualizing\u201d different things won\u2019t help. So politically correct oriental scholars of Europe have coined a respective \u201cinoffensive\u201d term by calling this practice \u201cpostural yoga\u201d.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A different approach to the practice was developed (and called \u201chatha yoga\u2019) in India by ca. the end of the first millennium. This system was antithetical to Greek body aesthetics and its exertion technique but was impregnated with ideas of Indian pharmacy (Rasayana) and Tantra, and advanced two fundamental ideas concerning the body.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The first concept is psychosomatics, that is, a method of affecting one\u2019s state of mind with the help of the body. The Naths were the ones who elaborated the subject to the best. They happened to notice not only the association between emotional states and different body parts, but also the even more profound correlation between mind and breathing \u2013 and thus laid the theoretical groundwork of pranayama practices. Let me draw a few examples:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>dugdha\u1e41buvat sammilitau sadaiva tulyakriyau m\u0101nasam\u0101rutau ca<\/div>\n<div>|\u2028y\u0101van manas tatra marutprav\u1e5bttir y\u0101van maruc c\u0101pi mana\u1e25prav\u1e5btti\u1e25 || (27)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Just like water and milk when mixing up become one, the same mind (manas) does with breathing. Wherever the mind, there goes breathing, wherever breathing, there goes the mind.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>(Amanaska).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The meaning of this line is clear for those who\u2019ve worked with body and emotions. One breathes with a zone in which their actual emotions are located. And vice versa: activation of a chakra emotional experience boosts corresponding body zone involvement in the process of respiration. Hence comes the idea that a \u201cthin\u201d (chitta, mind, manas) can be controlled with the help of a \u201crough\u201d \u2013 breathing. That is the idea of pranayama.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This line develops the idea of Patanjali who wrote in this respect that pranayama gives stability of chitta and manas\u2019 ability to concentrate. But the pathos (and, probably, the degree of the subject development) of the medieval texts is much stronger. Yoga Bija, for instance, states that:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>cittam pr\u0101\u1e47na sannaddha\u1e43 sarvaj\u012bve\u1e63u sa\u1e43sthitam\u0964<\/div>\n<div>rajjau yadvatpar\u012bbaddh\u0101 rajv\u012b tadvadime mate\u0965(79)<\/div>\n<div>Just like one rope is bound with another one, mind [citta] and prana are bound in all living beings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>n\u0101n\u0101 vidhairvic\u0101raistu na s\u0101dhya\u1e43 j\u0101\u1e47ate mana\u1e25<\/div>\n<div>tasm\u0101ttasya jayop\u0101ya\u1e25 pr\u0101\u1e47a eva hi n\u0101nyath\u0101\u0965(80)<\/div>\n<div>Different practices of vicara shall not help attain control over the mind. <b>Thus the only (!)<\/b> means of keeping it under control is prana.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In developing this concept Gorakshashataka advances an even bolder, almost extreme idea of pranayama to be an instrument of both spiritual deliverance and overcoming karma:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>pr\u0101\u1e47\u0101y\u0101mo bhavatyeva\u1e41 p\u0101takendhanap\u0101vaka\u1e25 |<\/div>\n<div>bhavodadhimah\u0101setu\u1e25 procyate yogibhi\u1e25 sad\u0101 || 10 ||<\/div>\n<div>Pranayama is fire which firewood is made of faults (pataka). Yogis always call it a grand passage across the ocean of being.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Even though this opinion seems to be totally surprising, it has its inner logic. Indeed, if karma has psychologic nature and comes as manifestation of sanskaras and vasanas (this is what Patanjali wrote about), it is then subject to changes through working with one\u2019s mind. <b>Early sources on yoga, including Patanjali (and even Bhagavad Gita) proposed knowledge (jnana) to be an instrument of such changing. <\/b>So there is a principal difference here.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Today the practicians who seriously treat body as a key to working with one\u2019s psyche and are sufficiently competent in this issue are few in number, though it is exactly what makes the essence of hatha yoga.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The second idea of the medieval yoga lies in possibility of physical body qualitative transformation. In this case, it is related to feasibility of control over physiological functions that might in future result in longevity that are considered, rather than aesthetic conditions. Yoga Bija, a medieval treatise, writes the following:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u015bar\u012bre\u1e47a jit\u0101 sarve \u015bar\u012bra\u1e43 yogibhirjitam\u0964<\/div>\n<div>tatkatha\u1e43 kurute te\u1e63\u0101\u1e43 sukhadu\u1e25kh\u0101dika phalam\u0965(49)<\/div>\n<div>Everyone is conditioned (conquered) by the body, while the body is conquered by yogis. How can they be affected by fruits of pleasure or suffering?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Another quotation from the same source illustrates the principle of body transformation:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>apakv\u0101\u1e25 paripakv\u0101\u015bca dvivadh\u0101 dehina\u1e25 sm\u1e5bt\u0101\u1e25<\/div>\n<div>apakv\u0101 yogah\u012bn\u0101stu pakv\u0101 yogena dehina\u1e25<\/div>\n<div>34. Those having body are of two kinds: \u201cimmature\u201d (apakva) and \u201cmature\u201d (paripakva). Immature are those who lack yoga, while maturity is attained by means of yoga.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>But were these approaches \u2013 the training method of the Greeks or the alchemic system used by the Naths \u2013 valid for Patanjali?\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Let us figure it out drawing on the example of asanas.<\/div>\n<div>The term \u0101sanam stems from the root \u0101s \u2013 to sit \u2013 by means of adding the suffix -ana that creates the name of an action. Thus, asana means \u201csitting\u201d. In this sense the phrase \u201cstanding asana\u201d is an oxymoron that emerged after numerous modifications of the term original meaning.<\/div>\n<div>Yoga Sutras give a clear definition of asana:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sthira-sukham \u0101sanam \u0965 46\u0965<\/div>\n<div>Asana is what [tends to be] steady and pleasant.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As we see, this definition lacks any reference to body \u201ctraining\u201d or \u201ckeeping under control\u201d. One can hardly condition or stretch something by staying in a pleasant and comfortable pose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The author of YS does not offer a more detailed explanation, let alone a list of asanas. The list, however, can be found in the work of Vyasa, while a very short description of asanas&#8217; performance is given by Vyasa\u2019s commentator, Vachaspati Mishra. So let us take to studying these lists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Vyasa is very concise, and his comment to the line 2.46 comes as a mere recapitulation of asanas:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u09652.46\u0965 tadyath\u0101 <b>padm\u0101sana\u1e43 v\u012br\u0101sana\u1e43 bhadr\u0101sana\u1e43 svastika\u1e43 da\u1e47\u1e0d\u0101sana\u1e43 sop\u0101\u015braya\u1e43 parya\u1e45ka\u1e43 krau\u00f1cani\u1e63adana\u1e43 hastini\u1e63adanam u\u1e63\u1e6drani\u1e63adana\u1e43 samasa\u1e43sth\u0101na\u1e43<\/b> sthirasukha\u1e43 yath\u0101sukha\u1e43 cetyevam\u0101d\u012bni\u0964<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some of them are familiar to us: Padmasana, Virasana (though there is a nuance here that I\u2019ll come back to later), Svastikasana, Bhadrasana, Dandasana. Others have not been made part of modern guidelines on yoga: the seated heron pose (<b>krau\u00f1cani\u1e63adana\u1e43<\/b>), the seated elephant pose (<b>hastini\u1e63adanam<\/b>), as well as the pose of camel who does the same (<b>u\u1e63\u1e6drani\u1e63adana\u1e43<\/b>). It is also not clear what they mean by the \u201csupported\u201d pose (<b>sop\u0101\u015braya\u1e43<\/b>) and <b>parya\u1e45ka\u1e43<\/b> &#8211; the asana which name can be translated as \u201clying\u201d as well as \u201csquatting\u201d pose. To explain all above let us turn to the sub-comment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As to the lotus pose, Vachaspati Mishra does not even explain it and simply writes that:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>padm\u0101sana\u1e43 prasiddham\u0964<\/div>\n<div>The lotus posture is well-known<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Most probably, this pose was popular 1000 years ago.<\/div>\n<div>As to the \u2018supported pose\u201d, Mishra gives the following elucidation:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>yogapa\u1e6d\u1e6dakayog\u0101t sop\u0101\u015brayam\u0964<\/div>\n<div>i.e. [this pose is called so] because the body (kaya) is bonded (yoga) by yogapatta \u2013 a special-purposed rope.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Perhaps it looked in the following way:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35375 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0439\u043e\u0433\u0430-\u0441\u0443\u0442\u0440\u0430-\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0438-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0439\u043e\u0433\u0430-\u0441\u0443\u0442\u0440\u0430-\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0438-.jpg 289w, https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0439\u043e\u0433\u0430-\u0441\u0443\u0442\u0440\u0430-\u043f\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0436\u0430\u043b\u0438--217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Vachaspati\u2019s explanation of seated heron, elephant and camel poses is rather ironic:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>krau\u00f1cani\u1e63adan\u0101d\u012bni krau\u00f1c\u0101d\u012bn\u0101\u1e43 ni\u1e63a\u1e47\u1e47\u0101n\u0101\u1e43 sa\u1e43sth\u0101nadar\u015ban\u0101t pratyetavy\u0101ni\u0964<\/div>\n<div>The heron and other seats may be understood by actually seeing the seated animals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So let us try to observe them the way we can. Sure, for a European individual who\u2019s been \u201ctensed\u201d by cold climate and corresponding nutrition mode assuming the lotus pose or Bhadrasana may seem to be a daring deed or even the goal of yoga, but for a man of Hindu anthropologic type these are truly comfortable and stable poses. A shopkeeper selling betel pepper in a small cabin can easily spend all day long sitting in Svastikasana or Bhadrasana.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35384 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/varanasi_584.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/varanasi_584.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/varanasi_584-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>An attentive reader might ask here: and what about Virasana? Mallinson&#8217;s reports. Even today different schools teach a different performance of the pose they call Virasana. Sometimes it is identified with Virabhadrasana, Hanumanasana and others, and sometimes it is not. For instance, the Virasana of Iyengar School looks differently:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35396 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0432\u0438\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0430.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0432\u0438\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0430.png 396w, https:\/\/www.in.yoga\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/\u0432\u0438\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0430-297x300.png 297w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But what was the Virasana of Vyasa? We have the description given by Vachaspati Mishra:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>sthitasyaikatara\u1e25 p\u0101do bh\u016bmyasta ekatara\u015b c\u0101ku\u00f1citaj\u0101nor upari nyasta ity etad v\u012br\u0101sanam\u0964<\/div>\n<div>A sthita [man] has one leg on the ground and the other leg is placed over it with a bent knee \u2013 this is Virasana.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The description is terse and it is difficult to say how it really looked like. Moreover, that the word sthita may refer both to a person sitting on a bench and a standing one. But it definitely did not look like the above-shown standing pose. I think they mean here a pose that resembles Classic Indian sitting on a throne. Neither have they the effect of body \u201csubordination\u201d. These are just poses that are comfortable for meditation or doing pranayamas. At the times of Patanjali mastering an asana had nothing to do with body tough workout. It was the ability to assume meditative poses for a long period of time without making the \u2013 what we would call today \u2013 neurotic moves. The yoga of Patanjali is a system of psycho-techniques. As to the stemming of other concepts, in particular, those body-oriented \u2013 the developing and therapeutic approaches \u2013 they result from the next stages of evolvement of Yoga as a Tradition.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This unscheduled article has been induced by my short post on Facebook.
